Itinerary
Day 1 - Starting: Kilimanjaro Airport - Lake Manyara National Park & Finishing: Kilimanjaro Airport - Lake Manyara National Park
On arrival in Kilimanjaro Airport you will be met by a Peregrine representative and driven to your lodge. Please arrive before 2pm so you have time to transfer to Lake Manyara. It will be a three-hour drive to your lodge, passing through the typical Tanzanian rural village of Mto Wa Mbu and climbing up part of the Great Rift Valley. You will arrive at the Lake Manyara Serena Lodge in the late afternoon and enjoy your first game drive. Even though much of the national park is covered in water, it still has a variety of habitats, including grassy floodplain, rocky escarpment, acacia woodland and groundwater forest, meaning it attracts a large diversity of wildlife – buffalo, giraffe, antelope, baboons, and more. Your accommodation is spectacularly perched high on the escarpment overlooking the alkaline Lake Manyara – a wonderful place to spend the first night of your Tanzanian safari.
Day 2 - Starting: Lake Manyara - Tarangire National Park & Finishing: Lake Manyara - Tarangire National Park
This morning you will explore more of Lake Manyara National Park on a short game drive. This picturesque lake is home to a large number of birds, including flamingos and pelicans, which can be seen in the water or on the shore. The area is also renowned for black-maned, tree-climbing lions, who have developed this habit due to the marshy soil. Witnessing one of these is real highlight of any safari. The park is a great place for elephant watching, with numbers thankfully returning to substantial levels after declines due to poaching. These incredible creatures are somewhat relaxed around vehicles, making viewing that much easier. After lunch back at the lodge, you’ll depart Lake Manyara for Tarangire National Park, home to one of the highest wildlife concentrations in the area. The region is drier than the Serengeti but more densely vegetated, with immense baobab trees throughout. Your accommodation tonight is beautifully located, with wonderful views out to the distant Rift Escarpment and Lake Manyara in the background. Notes: Your game drive within Lake Manyara National Park will be a shared activity. You will be accompanied by other guests from the lodge. Total driving time today is approximately 3 hours.
Day 3 - Starting: Tarangire National Park & Finishing: Tarangire National Park
Today you will enjoy two game drives, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. This will allow you to see animals at their most active and avoid the heat of midday. Tarangire National Park lies to the south of the Masailands and is defined by large open savannas dotted with acacia woodland and large baobab trees. With the presence of the Tarangire River, this park forms a refuge during the dry season for many migratory animals, ensuring that Tarangire's wildlife concentration is second only to that of Ngorongoro Crater. The quantity of buffalo, giraffe, eland and warthog that congregate around the river numbers in the thousands, while impala, zebra and wildebeest are in the tens of thousands. This obviously means that many large predators can also be found here, but they often prove elusive to spotters. Much more visible are the elephants which, like at Manyara, are drawn by the water. Notes: Again, your game drives within Tarangire National Park will be shared activities. You will be accompanied by other guests from the lodge. Total driving time today is approximately 7 hours, including game drives.
Day 4 - Starting: Tarangire National Park - Kilimanjaro Airport & Finishing: Tarangire National Park - Kilimanjaro Airport
You will farewell Tarangire National Park and this part of your African adventure with an early morning game drive, soaking up the views of this remarkable wilderness before returning to Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) via Arusha. Any flights out of the Kilimanjaro or Arusha airports should not be booked prior to 5pm. Should you wish to depart from Arusha Airport (ARK), a transfer can be booked (at an additional cost). Please contact your booking agent to arrange. Notes: Total driving time today is approximately 6 hours.
