More Information
The stupa of Shwedagon Pagoda is encrusted with some 5000 diamonds and 2500 rubies. It has also been gold-plated since the 15th century, when the Mon Queen Sinsawbu donated her weight in gold to the cause, and her son-in-law Dhammazedi provided four times his own weight and the weight of his wife in gold. This started a long-lasting tradition of people from all over Myanmar donating gold to the pagoda for its upkeep.  Â
