Itinerary
Day 1 - Starting: Nairobi - Samburu National Park & Finishing: Nairobi - Samburu National Park
This Independent Experience starts at your Nairobi hotel or from Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where you will be met by our representative and transferred to Wilson Airport (Nairobi's domestic airport) (approximately 45 minutes). At Wilson Airport you’ll take a short 75-minute flight to Samburu, where you’ll be met by your local guide and transferred to the camp. There are two daily flights from Wilson Airport (07:30am & 9:15am). Please ensure your international flight arrival into Nairobi allows you sufficient time to clear customs and be transferred to Wilson Airport. If your flight does not arrive early enough, you need to arrive one day earlier and book one night's pre-tour accommodation as well as an arrival transfer. Samburu National Park is located in Kenya’s rugged and remote northern Great Rift Valley, and sits on the bank of the Ewaso Ngiro River, which draws plenty of wildlife. When you arrive in the park you’ll embark on your first game drive – look out for the long-necked gerenuk antelope, which can often been seen standing precariously on their hind legs, stretching up tree trunks to feast on the leaves. Your accommodation tonight is in a luxury tented camp on the banks of the river, where it’s possible to see elephants from your tent.
Day 2 - Starting: Samburu National Park & Finishing: Samburu National Park
Continue your exploration of this lesser known park, but one that still teems with wildlife and beautiful landscapes. Your daily routine at Samburu will vary, as on some days picnics will be taken out on extended half-day or full-day game drives. Your typical daily routine however involves waking at dawn for a light breakfast followed by an early morning game drive (in 4WD safari vehicles with opening roof hatches), setting off at sunrise and returning to the camp three to four hours later. Breakfast is a leisurely affair, taken outdoors in the morning sunlight, with lunch usually served al-fresco too. During the heat of the day there’s time to relax and enjoy the tranquillity of the bush, punctuated only by intermittent birdcalls. An afternoon game drive departs around 4pm and returns after sunset. On returning to the camp, freshen up before joining other guests around the campfire for a pre-dinner drink. Samburu is one of the best places in the country to see elephants thanks to the Ewaso Nyiro River, and you’re more that likely to see herds in its waters. Three types of big cat (lion, cheetah, and leopard) call the park home, along with buffalo, hippos, two different types of Zebra, Nile crocodiles, and of course numerous bird species. The park was one of the places that Joy Adamson raised Elsa the Lioness, made famous by the book and film ‘Born Free’. The views of wildlife are made all the more impressive by the mountains of Koitogor and Ololokwe on the skyline. Notes: Your game drive within Samburu National Park will be a shared activity. You will be accompanied by other guests of the lodge.
Day 3 - Starting: Samburu National Park - Nairobi & Finishing: Samburu National Park - Nairobi
This morning you’ll enjoy your final sunrise game drive to soak up the memorable Samburu views, and then return to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast until departure. Your flight back to Nairobi should arrive no later than 5pm. Please do not book onwards flights out of Nairobi prior to 9pm. Upon arrival into Wilson Airport you will be met and transferred to either a Nairobi city hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Please note that the actual flight you are booked on is subject to availability and will be confirmed upon booking.
