Itinerary
Day 1 - Starting: Quito - Otavalo & Finishing: Quito - Otavalo
Your Independent Experience will start today with a pick-up at 8 am from your Quito hotel. Contact us if you need assistance arranging accommodation in Quito. If you book your own accommodation, please ensure you inform us your hotel address at least 15 days prior to the start of this trip. You and your local guide head north by private minivan along the Pan-American highway. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive). On the way you visit the village of Calderon to see the bread figures and Cayambe to taste the typical 'biscochos' (local biscuits). The town is famous for its market, one of the most significant indigenous markets in Ecuador. Villagers from the surrounding area travel to Otavalo each week to sell their wears. You will find everything from handmade goods to fruit and vegetables and livestock. Many of the regional indigenous communities still wear traditional dress of intricately woven fabrics and the men often wear their hair in long ponytails. After exploring Otavalo Market you go on to the leather market at Cotacachi, before making your way to a hacienda in Otavalo where you spend the night.
Day 2 - Starting: Liberty Train - Quito & Finishing: Liberty Train - Quito
Today you drive to Ibarra, where you'll embark on a train journey through small communities and scenic mountain landscapes. This is a part of Ecuador that you won't forget. The journey between Ibarra and Salinas takes 1.5 hours and passes many waterfalls, bridges and tunnels to remote towns that are inhabited mainly by Ecuadorians of African ancestry, who have maintained many of their old customs and traditions as reflected in their crafts and their music. In the afternoon your guide will pick you up from Salinas to take you back to Quito for the night.
Day 3 - Starting: Quito & Finishing: Quito
Your Independent Experience comes to an end today after breakfast. You have an included departure transfer to meet your flight out. Please ensure we are advised of your flight details.
