Itinerary
Day 1 - Starting: Beijing & Finishing: Beijing
Ni hao! Welcome to China. A Beijing airport or train station arrival transfer is included, please provide your flight/train details at the time of booking, or no later than 14 days prior to travel. Once you have provided your details a transfer representative will be booked to meet you and transfer you to your hotel. Your local guide will meet and greet you at the hotel upon your arrival. The remainder of today is at your leisure in Beijing, so you can start your explorations of this vast and amazing city. Perhaps track down a bargain at one of the many markets, see the hutongs and back lanes of Beijing by rickshaw, or explore Tiananmen Square.
Day 2 - Starting: Beijing & Finishing: Beijing
Begin your day with a visit to the Temple of Heaven, a fine example of extraordinary workmanship, and surrounded by a park that is one of the most popular in Beijing. At any time of the day it is full of people of all ages taking part in traditional pastimes such as tai chi, fan dancing, singing, kite flying, water calligraphy and more. Pass by Tian'anmen Square – a place of pilgrimage for the Chinese tourists who consider it the heart of their nation – and enter the enormous Forbidden City. Built more than 500 years ago and off limits to commoners for almost all that time, it is a truly amazing place. Despite the transformation of the city around it, the Forbidden City thankfully looks much like it always has. As you explore the great halls and grand courtyards you’ll be able to appreciate the might and grandeur of the Imperial Chinese court during the height of its power in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Take some time to wander the enchanting grounds of Jingshan Park (north of the Forbidden City), climb up to the top of the hill for a panoramic view, and catch a moment of serenity in a city of 11 million. Tonight is free for you to enjoy as you wish – perhaps catch a performance by the world renowned Beijing Acrobats.
Day 3 - Starting: Beijing & Finishing: Beijing
No trip to China would be complete without a visit to the Great Wall. Today you’ll take an early morning visit to one of the best-preserved areas, the Mutianyu section (approximately 2 hours), featuring guard towers dating back to the Ming dynasty. An incredible piece of engineering, the wall stretches 6,000 km westwards from the mountain ridges north of Beijing. It was originally constructed to protect Chinese empires from the 'barbarians' of the north and even though it failed in this purpose, it is still without a doubt one of the country's most remarkable achievements, and an iconic destination. It's a 30-minute climb up some steep steps to the wall itself, but it’s well worth the effort. There’s also the option of taking a chair lift or cable car to the top and back if you’re after a more leisurely experience. It’s possible to feel like you have the whole wall to yourself as you take your time strolling along the wall, which snakes through the hills and seemingly endlessly into the distance. Being perched on this incredible engineering feat and surveying the spectacular surrounding countryside is an unforgettable experience. You’ll have a few hours to explore before heading back to the city for the afternoon and a visit to the Summer Palace. This is one of the best imperial gardens in China, a summer retreat for the Qing Dynasty, and features stunning artwork of imperial life on The Long Corridor. After a busy day of sightseeing, return to your hotel. For your final evening, why not try the famous Peking duck for dinner. Notes: Please note that the wall is quite steep in places, so make sure you have some appropriate footwear for this activity.
Day 4 - Starting: Beijing & Finishing: Beijing
Your Beijing Experience comes to an end this morning after breakfast. There are no activities planned for the final day and you are able to depart the accommodation at any time. Notes: A departure transfer is included but must be organised prior to departure.
